Brightness of LED strip - Lumens not watts | High lumen LED strip
Brightness of LED strip
As LED strip is becoming an increasingly popular choice of lighting, we need to know more about how to measure its brightness in lumens.
Conventionally, the measurement of a light's output has been determined by the wattage rating e.g. 60W and 100W incandescent bulbs gave out differing amounts of light and we judged this light output by the power rating.
Measuring the brightness of light by wattage is not an accurate measure; wattage tells us the power input to the light source, not the light output - wattage is a measurement of the energy required to operate the light.
When we talk about brightness using LED strip lighting, we denote this by the amount of lumens per metre emitted, otherwise known as luminous flux.
Lumens are a measurement of the amount of light produced by its source, this is not a new phenomenon and has always been the case, it's just that we have used wattage rating in its place in most instances until now.
If you want to know how bright an LED strip is, the amount of lumens per metre is your answer - if you need bright LED strip lighting for your area, you should look for an LED strip with an output of at least 1250 lumens per metre.
Details of the lumens per metre should always be within the LED strip specification - check for this.
